Traditional Japanese Sword Seminar
Sydney 13th February 2010

On the weekend of 12/13/14th February, Aikido Liverpool hosted David Sensei in Sydney to teach a Traditional Japanese Sword Seminar. The seminar was held at the Liverpool PCYC and was attended by students from Tony Neal Sensei’s dojo and visitors from the St. Clair dojo as well as teachers and students from Aikido Yuishinkai Canberra and Aikido Yuishinkai Wagga. A special thanks to those who travelled so far!

The day long seminar commenced with a demonstration of Shinto Muso Ryu including Kenjutsu and Jojutsu. This was followed by detailed instruction and training in sword drawing, cutting, kata (pre-arranged paired forms) and tachi-tori (sword taking). Those attending had varied experience in Aikido, karate-do, Iaido and other arts and many had attended a seminar in 2009 so were already able to perform some basic elements. David Sensei really appreciated the wealth of experience many of the participants brought to the day as it invited a deeper investigation of the philosophical and practical relationship of traditional swordsmanship to todays’ Japanese Budo.

The final session on Tachi-tori (sword taking) provided a fascinating insight into the area where Koryu (old) and Shinryu (modern) Budo overlap. This highlighted how the practicalities of certain aspects of swordsmanship can beneficially modify our modern practice concepts and methods.

David Sensei and AMAI would like to express their sincere gratitude to Tony Neal Sensei from Aikido Liverpool (a great host J), Murray Loader Sensei from Aikido Yuishinkai Canberra and all participants for their wonderful support.

We very much look forward to the next Seminar in this series which will be held in Canberra on 18/19/20th June 2010 – See you there!

Traditional Japanese Sword Seminar

Bundaberg 6th March 2010

David Sensei conducted a 5 hour Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu Seminar in Bundaberg on Saturday 6th March. Thank you to all those who travelled from far afield to attend as well as those from Bundaberg – it was great to meet so many interested martial artists. Everyone was very enthusiastic to learn the fundamental aspects of using a live Japanese sword.

The seminar covered sword terminology and care, correct positioning in the obi (belt), correct hand grip, drawing and cutting in one motion (Iaijutsu), two methods for resheathing the blade, basic cutting, paired drills and finally basic paired Kata. David Sensei’s emphasis on safe practice was very much appreciated by all the participants as was the level of detail he was able to provide.

The sword is the central weapon in Japanese martial arts (Budo) and all Japanese arts owe some elements of their training and philosophy to this weapon. David Sensei was able to assist people with various martial experiences to identify how they could better understand and practise their arts as a result of certain practicalities and understanding the relationship with traditional Japanese swordsmanship. Many participants practising more modern martial arts such as Karate-do and mixed martial arts (MMA) explained how studying swordsmanship helped them appreciate the roots of their training.

AMAI is very grateful once more to Lylie Purcell sensei and students for hosting the seminar and look forward to the next instalment scheduled for Saturday 3rd July 2010. See you there.
