Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu (Sword) Seminar Canberra

On Saturday 19 June Dangerfield Sensei introduced Shinto Muso Ryu Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu to an attentive audience in Canberra. Three different Aikido styles and several unaffiliated martial arts practitioners made up the 35 attendees, including 5 from Sydney and 8 from Wagga Wagga. Aikido Yuishinkai Canberra hosted the seminar in one of their dojos, which was luckily in a park large enough to handle the kata training – which proved to be a bit crisp in the Canberra winter. Next time we’ll make sure the backup hall doesn’t go away...
The audience were largely there to find out how a koryu art differed to their own training (mostly Aiki ken and Iaido). The general opinion was that the level of detail in explanation and execution, and the impeccable logic behind the “why” were compelling. Many attendees intend to return to future seminars and to adapt their own training to the questions and answers posed by the SMR material. Dangerfield Sensei, ably assisted by Amy Suttor, provided a skilled, approachable, helpful and passionate seminar that answered many questions and opened quite a few eyes. The Canberra community is exploring the possibility with Dangerfield Sensei of significantly expanding their interaction.

It wasn’t all martial arts of course, and fortunately David and Amy had made time to have a look around Canberra, which is very pretty at this time of year, plus of course a very pleasant dinner or two. Canberra is looking forward to the next one.

Chida Shihan Seminar & Aikido Shudokan’s 24th Annual Demonstration

2010 is certainly a very significant year for Aikido Shudokan; hosting Chida Tsutomu Shihan and Celebrating 30 years of Yoshinkan Aikido with the huge 24th annual demonstration!

David Sensei & I flew down to Melbourne to attend both Chida Sensei’s Seminar and Aikido Shudokan’s 24th annual demonstration.
The 3 day Seminar, starting on Saturday 24th April, was not only a wonderful experience to learn from Chida Sensei, but also a great way to train with and meet Yoshinkan Aikido practitioners from Australia and abroad.

The 24th Annual Demonstration, scheduled after the last session of Chida Sensei’s seminar, ran absolutely like clockwork from its 2pm start time. The Demonstration featured Aikido practitioners including Chida Tsutomu Sensei, Saburo Takashima Sensei, Joe Thambu Sensei, Darren Friend Sensei, David Dangerfield Sensei and Ramlan Ahmed Sensei.

AMAI Traditional Martial Arts wishes to formally congratulate Joe Thambu Sensei on his 30 years teaching Aikido and Aikido Shudokan’s 24th anniversary. It is a true achievement and is certainly something the whole dojo can take pride in.
